During the School Board’s special session on Tuesday, June 18, Interim Superintendent Paula Radich provided a budget update, and there were also leadership changes on the School Board.
Budget
Dr. Radich’s budget presentation is available on the School District’s website. There will be another update at 5:30 p.m. tonight (June 24, 2024) during the School Board’s budget hearing.
Zone 5 Position
Former Director Renee Powell vacated her Zone 5 position, so the School Board needed to appoint a replacement to complete the remaining year of Powell’s term. After soliciting applications and holding interviews, the successful appointee was Aubrey Nichols. Nichols is the former Executive Director of the Newberg Downtown Coalition and the current President of the Edwards Volunteer Organization, the organization that supports Edwards Elementary School’s staff and activities. Nichols has two children currently attending NDPS. In addition to her qualifications, what made Nichols stand out as a candidate was her interest in running for reelection at the end of her appointed term. The School Board said this offered continuity of leadership when two other positions will also be up for reelection next year.
Student Reps
The School Board voted unanimously to approve Student Representatives to fill the three open positions. Seven students applied, and four came in for an interview in June. The Board’s criteria included how well they did during the interview as well as their school activities, leadership, and volunteerism. All three were incoming seniors at Newberg High School: Sienna Hansen, Oliver Kolbet, and Katelyn Nummelin.
