Calendar Update and More at School Board Meeting

Photo: The School Board and Superintendent Stephen W. Phillips observed Child Abuse Prevention Month this April.

Discussion about a large donation, out-of-state travel, an update on COA, the Parent Bill of Rights, the academic calendar, and more took place at the April 9 School Board meeting. The School Board also shared a reminder that April is Child Abuse Prevention Month.

Child Abuse Prevention Month

The School Board planted pinwheels in deep blue and wore shirts of the same color to observe Child Abuse Prevention Month. They also set up a sign sharing a place that can help: julietteshouse.org.

Consent Agenda

The board approved several positive items on the Consent Agenda, a group of agenda items that are small but have a big impact:

  • Out-of-State Travel: Migrant high schoolers were granted permission to visit Washington, D.C., from May 12 to 17.

The district and COA are working together along with Principal Chris Stevens and his staff to improve the program. To volunteer at COA, contact Stevens at [email protected].

Parent Bill of Rights

The Policy Committee, which includes School Board Directors Sol Allen, Trevor DeHart, and James Wolfer,  noted that most of the content was included in other policies, but they liked how an existing description coalesced rights parents already have. The School Board proposed highlighting the description as a statement on the website but will discuss it further at a future work session and/or board retreat.

Board Action Items

The School Board:

  • Appointed two School Board members to a facilities committee: Directors Trevor DeHart and Jeremy Hayden
  • Appointed three School Board members to a personnel committee: Vice Chair Deb Bridges, Director James Wolfer, and Chair Nancy Woodward
  • Approved the extension of the contract with HMS for one year for bond-funded improvements to the HVAC computerized control system
  • Approved the contract for Snyder Roofing to work on the Newberg High School roof
