Update: How All Our Schools Are Doing at OBOB

The Oregon Battle of the Books (OBOB) competitions are coming to a close. Here is the latest on how our Newberg-Dundee Public Schools teams did, with another update still to come with some teams participating in regional events this month.

This year, the School District had OBOB teams in grade levels K-8. Our local teams have been participating in the 2024 Regional Tournaments, which run from March 2 to 30. The OBOB State Tournament will be held on April 13. Each school provided an update on their teams, and all were asked to share a photo if they had one handy:

  • Stephanie Miller, Librarian at Mountain View Middle School, said: “We had 26 students finish out the season at Mountain View (6 teams, which is great for middle school). Our champion team, The Griffins, are headed to Regionals in Dallas this upcoming weekend (March 16).”

  • Blythe Darula, Librarian at Chehalem Valley Middle School, said: “We started with 13 students and ended up with 8 at the end. We are sending Four Dames and a Dude to Regionals this weekend (March 16).”

  • Chris Mariman, Librarian at Ewing Young Elementary School, said: “Ewing Young had 6 teams, with a total of 22 students. Our winning team was the Bookbirds, and they competed at regionals last Saturday (March 9).”

  • Kim Peck, Librarian at Antonia Crater Elementary School, said: “We had 22 students participate in OBOB, 5 teams. We sent a team, The Royal Readers, to Regionals in Woodburn.”

  • Liz Klemp, Librarian at Edwards Elementary School, said: “Edwards had 5 teams with 19 students competing.  Our school champions, The Firey Pages, came in 3rd at Regionals and will be competing at State on April 13. Let's Go!”

  • Lindy Rollins, Librarian at Joan Austin Elementary School, said: “We had three teams: 14 students participated this year. Team Zeus represented our school at regionals and came in 19th out of 42 teams.”
