Senior Night: A Celebration of Memories and Bright Futures

It is that time of year again when leaves are falling and the season is changing — time is passing (too quickly) for Newberg High School seniors like me.

I’ve already had to say goodbye to an important part of my life, being a competitive volleyball player on the varsity team. Fall sports are wrapping up and senior athletes like me will play or have already finished their final games of the season. As a defensive specialist, I played my final varsity volleyball game of the season on Oct. 17.

These final games are called senior nights, and they hold a special place in the hearts of student-athletes across all sports. During my final game, the seniors were escorted onto the court by our loved ones, given thoughtful senior baskets, and then played our hearts out. These traditions are done to recognize seniors for our commitment to the sport. I played for all four years, starting on junior varsity, and it felt so strange to say goodbye.

For seniors like me, the moment is bittersweet as we step onto the field, court, or track for the last time. We know that our time as high school athletes is coming to an end but feel excited for the bright future ahead.

The impact of senior nights is complex and goes well beyond the final score. It is about the friendships formed, the lessons learned, and the growth experienced throughout the years.

These nights celebrate the dedication, hard work, and passion that student-athletes have poured into their sport. It is a chance for teammates, coaches, and the entire community to come together and show their support, creating an atmosphere filled with pride and appreciation.

Senior nights leave a lasting impact, reminding athletes of the incredible journey they have been on and the legacy they leave behind. I’ll never forget the cheers from the crowd, the excitement of playing with my teammates, and the rollercoaster of emotions. I will always carry those moments as bright memories in my mind’s eye, and they will always be with me, no matter how quickly time passes.
